Years
ago, I was a member of a group of people who met monthly to share ideas
about alternative healing and holistic health practices. Each month
a guest would share their story and knowledge. On one occasion two men
came to talk about their journey in healing from a life-threatening
cancer.
The
first fellow talked in great detail about the macrobiotic diet that
he had followed while treating his cancer. He was absolutely convinced
that it was the stringent diet he followed that led to his cure. The
second fellow got up and talked about the lifestyle changes that he
created. He talked about how he had changed his beliefs and attitudes,
and how he approached his life differently.
After
the second man finished his talk, one of our members asked him what
special diet he had followed. After pausing for a few seconds he said,
"I've got to tell you; I just kept eating the same old crap."
Laughter
exploded from the audience. We had been reminded that it is easy to
get lost in the details, and forget to listen to the quiet wisdom of
our own inner voice. There are many paths to the top of the mountain.
Our responsibility is to be clear about our own path; whether or not
it fits someone else's ideas and beliefs.
What
is important is that we each follow the life path that honors who we
are. Each of us is a sacred spark of life - no exceptions.
